Why do we need to improve Tacit Knowledge Management (TKM)?
First, let’s look at this undeniable fact:
From birth, a child begins to learn, gathering knowledge and experiences primarily from parents, teachers, and through trial and error. Despite investing two decades in education and graduating from university, this child is still considered a “novice” when embarking on their first professional endeavor.
Throughout their career, as they transition from one workplace to another, some of the experiences and tacit knowledge accrued may not translate directly to the new environment. Upon resignation or retirement, only a fraction of this invaluable tacit knowledge is documented in writing or passed down to protégés, leaving a wealth of untapped wisdom.
Eventually, when an individual passes away, the vast majority of their accumulated knowledge and experiences returns to the earth, forcing the next generation to repeat the same learning journey.
For thousands of years, It appears as if humanity is trapped in this repetitive cycle. Is there a way out? Can we leverage this untapped tacit knowledge to enhance global learning efficiency, even by just 1%?
What is Tacit Knowledge?
Let’s look at this story below first:
A broken engine, an old man and a hammer
A giant engine in a factory failed and despite speaking with various ‘experts’ none were able to show the owners how they could solve the problem.
Eventually they brought in an old man who had many years’ experience fixing engines. After inspecting the huge engine for a minute or two, the old man pulled a hammer out of his tool bag. He gently tapped on the engine whereupon it immediately started working.
A week later the owners of the business received an invoice from the old man for £10,000. Flabbergasted, they wrote to the old man asking him to send through a breakdown of the invoice. The man replied:
- Tapping with a hammer: £2.00
- Knowing where to tap: £9,998.00
“Knowing where to tap” was the tacit knowledge of this old man!
